7Semi VCNL4030X01 Proximity And Ambient Light Sensor Nano Breakout With I2C Interface And Qwiic Connector

The 7Semi VCNL4030X01 Proximity and Ambient Light Sensor Nano Breakout is an ultra-compact board built around the Vishay VCNL4030X01 sensor. The chip combines a proximity sensor (PS), an ambient light sensor (ALS) and a high-power infrared emitter (IRED) in one small package. Photodiodes, amplifiers and analog-to-digital converting circuits are integrated on a single CMOS chip. The 940 nm IRED offers immunity to red glow, and the 16-bit ALS supports both dark and high-transparency lens designs.

The board runs at 3.3V and communicates over I2C at the default address 0x60. The onboard Qwiic connector allows solder-free connection to compatible microcontroller boards, which saves time during prototyping. Programmable interrupts with separate high and low thresholds for both ALS and PS reduce the polling load on the microcontroller and help save power. This makes the board well-suited for touch-screen locking, display dimming, presence detection and object detection in robots and consumer devices.

Key Features

  • Ultra-Compact Nano Form Factor: Small footprint suited to space-constrained designs and wearable-style prototypes.
  • Integrated Sensing And Emitter: Proximity sensor, ambient light sensor and high-power IRED in a single package.
  • Qwiic Connector: Plug-and-play connection to Qwiic-compatible microcontroller boards without soldering.
  • I2C Interface: Default address 0x60, with support for multiple slave addresses as per the chip datasheet.
  • 3.3V Operation: Compatible with common 3.3V microcontroller boards and logic.
  • 940 nm IRED: Immunity to red glow, with programmable IRED sink current.
  • Cross-Talk Cancellation: Intelligent cancellation to reduce the cross-talk phenomenon.
  • Fast Proximity Response: Smart persistence scheme to reduce PS response time.
  • Selectable PS Resolution: 12-bit or 16-bit proximity output data.
  • 16-Bit Ambient Light Sensing: High-resolution ALS with accuracy of +/-10%.
  • Flicker Immunity: Fluorescent light flicker immunity for stable readings.
  • Human-Eye Spectral Response: ALS spectrum close to real human eye response.
  • Programmable Interrupts: Individual upper and lower thresholds for ALS and PS, with adjustable persistence to prevent false triggers.
