The SparkFun RockBLOCK 9704 by Ground Control is a compact satellite communication breakout board built around the Iridium Certus 9704 IoT module, designed to provide truly global, low-data-rate connectivity. Featuring an integrated patch antenna and supercap charger for efficient low-power operation, it is an excellent solution for remote monitoring, asset tracking, maritime, environmental sensing, and off-grid IoT applications.
The RockBLOCK 9704 enables bi-directional messaging from 25 bytes up to 100 KB, with typical end-to-cloud latency under 10 seconds. Hardware interfaces include a 3.3V TTL UART, USB-C serial bridge for direct PC connection, and U.FL connector for GNSS passthrough, alongside support for SMA or built-in patch antenna configurations. Power-efficient operation makes it suitable for battery-powered and solar-backed deployments, with 1.4 W peak, 60 mW idle, and 5 mW sleep mode.
Key Features:
Global Iridium Satellite Connectivity: Works anywhere on Earth for bi-directional IoT messaging.
