SparkFun Ambient Light Sensor VEML7700 Qwiic for High-Accuracy Lux Measurement

The SparkFun Ambient Light Sensor – VEML7700 (Qwiic) is a compact, high-precision solution for measuring ambient light levels in embedded and IoT applications. Based on the Vishay VEML7700, this sensor delivers true-to-human-eye light response using Filtron technology and excellent output consistency through O-Trim calibration. With a 16-bit ADC and wide dynamic range, it accurately measures illumination from near darkness to bright sunlight, making it suitable for display brightness control, smart lighting, environmental monitoring, and wearable devices.

Designed for easy integration, the board uses the Qwiic I2C interface for solderless connectivity with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and other 3.3 V systems. Low power consumption, configurable refresh rates, flicker noise rejection, and interrupt support allow reliable operation in both battery-powered and always-on designs, while maintaining stable performance across temperature variations.

Key Features:

  • High Accuracy Sensing: Filtron technology for human eye–like spectral response
  • Output Consistency: O-Trim calibration with ≤10% ALS output tolerance
  • Wide Dynamic Range: 16-bit resolution measuring from 0 lx to ~167,000 lx
  • Fine Resolution: Sensitivity down to 0.005 lx per count
  • Flicker Rejection: Built-in 100 Hz and 120 Hz noise suppression
  • Low Power Operation: Ultra-low current draw with software shutdown mode
  • Interrupt Support: High and low threshold windows with interrupt flags
  • Easy Connectivity: Qwiic I2C interface with fixed address 0x10
