High-Precision 24-Bit Analog-to-Digital Converter with PGA and Sensor Excitation for Industrial Measurement Systems

The ADS1220IRVAR is a precision 24-bit analog-to-digital converter designed for accurate measurement of low-level sensor signals in industrial and embedded systems. Developed by Texas Instruments, this high-performance ADC integrates several essential analog functions including a programmable gain amplifier (PGA), voltage reference, oscillator, temperature sensor, and excitation current sources. These integrated features significantly reduce external component requirements, simplifying system design and lowering overall cost.

With a flexible input multiplexer supporting two differential inputs or four single-ended inputs, the ADS1220 is ideal for sensor measurement applications such as RTDs, thermocouples, thermistors, and resistive bridge sensors. The internal PGA supports gains up to 128 V/V, enabling precise measurement of very small signals. The device supports conversion rates up to 2000 samples per second and includes digital filtering that provides simultaneous 50 Hz and 60 Hz noise rejection, making it highly suitable for industrial environments with electrical interference.

Key Features

  • 24-Bit High Resolution ADC – Enables extremely accurate measurement of small analog signals.
  • Flexible Input Multiplexer – Supports 2 differential inputs or 4 single-ended analog inputs.
  • Integrated Programmable Gain Amplifier (PGA) – Adjustable gain up to 128 V/V for low-level sensor signals.
  • Integrated Excitation Current Sources – Simplifies interfacing with resistive sensors like RTDs and thermistors.
  • High Sampling Rate – Supports conversion speeds up to 2000 samples per second.
  • Industrial Noise Rejection – Digital filter provides simultaneous 50 Hz and 60 Hz rejection.
  • Built-in Voltage Reference and Oscillator – Reduces the need for external precision components.
  • Integrated Temperature Sensor – Allows internal temperature monitoring for system diagnostics.
  • Low Power Consumption – As low as 120 µA in duty-cycle mode for energy-efficient designs.
