Description

The Adafruit PiCowbell CAN Bus, is a powerful solution for connecting your Raspberry Pi Pico and Pico W projects to CAN bus networks in automotive and robotics applications. This compact device enables better range and addressing than I2C, making it ideal for sensor networks. With its 2-wire differential CAN bus design, it offers reliable communication over long distances and in noisy environments.

The PiCowbell utilizes the MCP2515 controller and TJA1051/3 transceiver, ensuring compatibility and ease of use. The MCP2515 is a widely supported chipset with Arduino and CircuitPython drivers, requiring only an SPI port and two pins for chip-select and IRQ. It allows you to send and receive messages in both standard and extended formats at speeds up to 1 Mbps.

To enhance its usability, several useful features included in the PiCowbell:
  • 5V charge-pump voltage generator: Provides a clean 5V signal even when running on a 3.3V Pico board, meeting the requirements of the transceiver.
  • Pre-soldered 3.5mm terminal block: Offers quick access to the High and Low data lines, as well as a ground pin.
  • On-board 120-ohm termination resistor: Easily remove the termination by cutting the jumper marked "Term" on the top of the board.
  • Pre-connected CS and INT pins: The Pico GPIO #20 and #21 pins are ready to use, but you can customize the connection by cutting the bottom solder jumpers and utilizing the breakout pads.

Experience seamless CAN bus connectivity for your Raspberry Pi Pico projects with the Adafruit PiCowbell CAN Bus, packed with features to simplify your integration process.
