Description

For seamless connectivity between boards with native CAN Peripheral support, the Adafruit CAN Pal Transceiver is the ideal solution. It takes 3V logic level signals and converts them to CAN logic levels, facilitating differential signaling required for communication. It's important to note that not all chips have a CAN peripheral. However, popular chips like ESP32/ESP32-S2/ESP32-S3 (referred to as TWAI instead of CAN), SAME51, STM32F405, and Teensy 4 are known to support CAN.

Before connecting the transceiver, refer to the product documentation of your board to ensure it has CAN support and the necessary RX and TX pins are available for connection. It's worth mentioning that despite sharing the "RX" and "TX" names with UART, they are not the same interface.

Originally designed for cars and buses, CAN Bus has become a popular small-scale networking standard for robotics and sensor networks. It offers better range and addressing capabilities than I2C and serves as an alternative for devices lacking Ethernet connectivity or sufficient computational abilities. With its 2-wire differential configuration, CAN is well-suited for long-distance communication in noisy environments.

Messages are transmitted at a rate of approximately 1Mbps. The bus frequency is set, and all connected devices must synchronize with it. Each node on the network possesses a unique address, enabling it to listen to messages intended specifically for it. Adding new nodes is a straightforward process as they only need to connect to the shared data lines. Each CAN device can send messages autonomously, and clever data encoding allows for collision detection and subsequent retransmission.
